The typical artistic depiction of Jesus as white is a reflection of whiteness: the sense of supremacy that drove European Catholic and Protestant Christianity to colonize and “civilize” the world in their own cultural image. But Jesus demonstrated the opposite of whiteness by centering the marginalized Other.  

Sometimes we imagine Jesus as the cosmic Ultimate Fighting Champion, whose defeat of sin, death, and the devil are the ultimate expression of power. But Jesus demonstrated both femininity and masculinity and explicitly refused force and violence, showing that a healthy spirituality is based on partnership and consent.

Sometimes we think of Jesus as the kind face of an authoritarian God who will punish us eternally if we disobey the rules. But Jesus taught a spirituality of authoritative relationships not blind authoritarianism, and judged most harshly those who made Torah a burden.
