New Teaching Series: Practices of Belonging

Learning to Practice Together

Christian spiritual practices are often imagined as private disciplines: my prayer life, my fasting, my giving, my relationship with God.

But across time and culture, Christianity has always used a shared vocabulary: we pray, we break bread, we fast, we baptize, we lament, we confess, we celebrate, and we give.

Beginning October 4, our new teaching series, Practices of Belonging, will explore eight ancient Christian practices through this collective lens – not simply asking how these practices shape me, but how they form us as a community committed to reclaiming Christian spirituality for love and liberation.

  • October 4: Prayer

  • October 11: Communion (World Communion Sunday)

  • October 18: Fasting

  • October 25: Baptism

  • November 1: Lament

  • November 8: Confession (Baptism Sunday)

  • November 15: Celebration (OSC’s 151st Anniversary Sunday)

  • November 22: Almsgiving

A companion book for this series

Throughout the series, we also invite you to read Miriam Diephouse-McMillan’s Sacred Balance with us as we consider what a shared life of spiritual practice might look like.

And if you are interested in being baptized on November 8, let us know. We would love to begin that conversation with you.

Spiritual practices aren’t simply things Christians do. They are among the ways we become a people capable of living the life to which Jesus calls us.
